How To Read This Page

Two doors can look identical from the sidewalk and behave nothing alike once January arrives or a car door swings into them. What separates them is the section: how many layers of steel it has, what sits between those layers, and whether that core is bonded to both skins or simply resting inside one.

Each type below covers what it is, how it is built, what it costs you in maintenance, how it handles New Jersey weather, and what happens when a section eventually gets damaged. Where a type has its own detailed page, there is a link straight to it.

Steel Garage Doors

The default residential door across New Jersey: roll-formed steel sections hung on a torsion or extension spring system.

Advantages

  • Best cost-to-lifespan ratio of any residential door
  • Available in every insulation level from single-layer to triple-layer
  • Baked-on finishes hold colour for years without refinishing
  • Wide window and panel-pattern selection

Trade-Offs

  • Thin gauges dent and the dent is permanent
  • Cut edges and deep scratches will surface-rust in salt air
Construction
Sections are pressed from 24 to 27 gauge galvanized steel, hemmed at the edges and joined with steel end stiles and hinges. Heavier gauges resist denting from basketballs, ladders and bumper taps.
Materials
Galvanized steel skin, polystyrene or polyurethane core on insulated builds, steel or composite end caps.
Durability
Twenty to thirty years is realistic inland. Shore towns near the bay see finish chalking and edge corrosion sooner, so we specify heavier gauge and a factory primer coat within a few miles of the water.
Maintenance
Wash the skin twice a year, keep the bottom seal clean so trapped grit does not hold moisture against the panel, and touch up chips before they open up.
Insulation
R-6 for basic polystyrene, R-12 to R-18 for polyurethane sandwich construction.
Appearance
Anything from flat contemporary panels to embossed woodgrain that reads convincingly as cedar from the curb.
Best Uses
Attached garages, detached garages, carriage barns, workshops — it is the safe answer when nothing about the house demands something exotic.
Windows
Top-section glazing in standard rectangles, arched inserts, or full window rows across a wide double door.
Finishes & Colors
Factory baked polyester over primer, smooth or woodgrain texture, plus low-gloss dark colours that hide surface waves.
Opener Notes
Compatible with every drive type. A double steel door with a polyurethane core wants 3/4 HP rather than 1/2 HP.
Repair
Individual dented sections can usually be swapped instead of replacing the whole door, provided the model is still in production.
Replacement
Replace when two or more sections are creased, when the end stiles have torn out, or when a single-layer door is bleeding heat off a finished room.

Wood Garage Doors

Solid or framed timber doors built for houses where the door is a piece of joinery rather than a panel.

Advantages

  • Nothing else matches real timber grain and depth
  • Panels can be milled to match an existing front door or trim
  • Damaged boards can be replaced or re-planed rather than scrapped
  • Naturally sound-deadening

Trade-Offs

  • Needs refinishing on a schedule, not when you get around to it
  • Heavy — spring sizing and hardware have to be specified to the actual weight
Construction
Either a stile-and-rail frame with floating panels, or a solid core clad in cedar, mahogany, hemlock or reclaimed lumber. Joinery is mortised or doweled so the sections can move seasonally without splitting.
Materials
Western red cedar, mahogany, redwood, hemlock, accoya, and marine-grade plywood cores on overlay builds.
Durability
Thirty years and more with disciplined finishing. Neglected for five, a south-facing wood door will grey, check and cup.
Maintenance
Re-oil or re-varnish every two to three years, sooner on the sun side. Keep the bottom rail sealed — water wicking up end grain is what destroys wood doors, not rain on the face.
Insulation
Solid timber gives roughly R-3 to R-6 unless an insulated core is built into an overlay design.
Appearance
Deep shadow lines, visible grain, and hardware that looks structural rather than decorative.
Best Uses
Colonials, shingle-style homes, restored farmhouses and any street where the neighbours' steel doors already look generic.
Windows
True divided lites, seeded or obscure glass, and arched top sashes cut into the upper rail.
Finishes & Colors
Penetrating oil, marine spar varnish, solid-body stain or full paint over a primed and back-sealed panel.
Opener Notes
Belt or jackshaft drives suit the weight and keep the noise down; a wall-mount unit avoids hanging a heavy trolley over the car.
Repair
Rot is cut back and scarfed in, hardware is through-bolted rather than screwed, and hinge locations are re-cored when screws strip.
Replacement
Replace when rails have separated at the joints or when the bottom sections have rotted through past the point of scarf repair.

Aluminum Garage Doors

Extruded aluminum frames with panel or glass infill, common on contemporary builds and on very wide openings.

Advantages

  • Will never rust, which matters within sight of the water
  • Light enough that hardware and springs last longer per cycle
  • Cleanest possible sightlines on wide modern openings
  • Anodized finishes are extremely colour-stable

Trade-Offs

  • Softer than steel — a hard knock leaves a dent
  • Bare frames conduct heat, so insulation depends on the infill
Construction
Anodized or powder-coated aluminum stiles and rails are cut, joined and glazed with tempered glass, acrylic or aluminum panels. The frame carries the load, so section weight stays low even at 18 feet wide.
Materials
6000-series aluminum extrusion, tempered or laminated glass, polycarbonate, insulated aluminum panel inserts.
Durability
Frames outlive most houses. Failures are usually in the glazing seals or the hinge fasteners, both of which are serviceable.
Maintenance
Rinse the frames, keep the glazing gaskets clean, and check hinge bolts annually — aluminum threads do not tolerate over-torquing.
Insulation
R-2 to R-4 with standard glazing; insulated panel infill or dual-pane glass raises that considerably.
Appearance
Slim frames, wide bays, and a flat plane that suits stucco, board-formed concrete and dark-clad modern facades.
Best Uses
Modern new builds, detached studios, coastal homes, and garages converted to living or gym space where daylight matters.
Windows
Full-view glazing is the point — clear, frosted, tinted, reeded or bronze depending on privacy needs.
Finishes & Colors
Clear or bronze anodize, and powder coat in any RAL colour including matte black, which is the current default here.
Opener Notes
Light sections work happily on belt drives; jackshaft units keep the ceiling free in a converted space.
Repair
Glazing panels swap individually, and bent stiles can often be pressed and re-bolted rather than replaced.
Replacement
Replace when multiple frame corners have racked out of square or when obsolete glazing profiles no longer accept a replacement pane.

Glass Garage Doors

Full-view doors where glass occupies nearly the whole face, framed in aluminum and specified pane by pane.

Advantages

  • Turns a dark garage into a usable daylit room
  • Obscure and frosted options give light without exposure
  • Reads as architecture rather than as a utility door

Trade-Offs

  • Highest cost per square foot of any residential door
  • Single-pane glass is a thermal hole in a heated garage
Construction
An aluminum grid holds tempered safety glass in every opening. Panes are set in gaskets so they can be replaced individually without dismantling the section.
Materials
Tempered, laminated, insulated dual-pane glass, acrylic and polycarbonate for impact-prone locations.
Durability
The frame is effectively permanent; glass is a consumable that a hail strike or a stray ball can take out.
Maintenance
Clean both faces, inspect gaskets for shrinkage, and keep drainage weeps in the bottom rail clear.
Insulation
Single-pane is roughly R-1. Insulated dual-pane units bring a full-view door into the R-4 to R-6 range.
Appearance
Bright, gridded, and unapologetically contemporary — though bronze frames with reeded glass also read well on older homes.
Best Uses
Home gyms, workshops, showrooms, pool houses and street-facing garages used as flex space.
Windows
The whole door is windows; the specification decisions are glass type, tint and privacy level.
Finishes & Colors
Anodized silver and bronze, plus powder-coated black, white and custom colours.
Opener Notes
Weight sits between steel and aluminum depending on glazing; insulated glass doors want 3/4 HP.
Repair
Single-pane replacement is a routine visit, and we carry gasket stock for the common frame profiles.
Replacement
Replace when the frame has been struck hard enough to rack, or when failed dual-pane seals have fogged most of the openings.

Fiberglass Garage Doors

Composite doors that use a fiberglass or SMC skin over a frame, usually to imitate timber without the upkeep.

Advantages

  • Immune to rot and rust
  • Grain texture stays convincing longer than embossed steel
  • Light for its size, easy on hardware

Trade-Offs

  • Older skins can yellow or become brittle after long UV exposure
  • Cracks are harder to repair invisibly than a steel dent
Construction
Moulded fiberglass skins are bonded to an aluminum or steel frame, often over a foam core, with the woodgrain pressed into the mould.
Materials
Fiberglass reinforced polymer skins, aluminum sub-frames, polyurethane or polystyrene cores.
Durability
Twenty years or more; UV stability of the specific skin matters more than the frame.
Maintenance
Wash seasonally, and re-coat with a UV-stable finish if the manufacturer supplies one for the skin.
Insulation
R-6 to R-12 depending on core thickness.
Appearance
Convincing timber texture, particularly in darker stain-look finishes.
Best Uses
Coastal properties that want a wood look without the refinishing schedule.
Windows
Moulded-in window openings with the same insert options as steel.
Finishes & Colors
Factory stain-look finishes, solid colours and paintable primed skins.
Opener Notes
Any drive type; the light weight makes belt drives especially quiet.
Repair
Hairline cracks are filled and refinished; a shattered skin means a section swap.
Replacement
Replace when skins have delaminated from the frame or when UV damage has gone chalky across the face.

Vinyl Garage Doors

PVC-skinned doors built for punishment — rentals, shore properties and houses with kids and hockey nets.

Advantages

  • Dents pop back rather than staying creased
  • Colour is integral, so scratches do not show a different substrate
  • No corrosion at all in salt air

Trade-Offs

  • Colour palette is limited compared with painted steel
  • Vinyl becomes less forgiving in deep cold
Construction
A heavy vinyl skin is laminated to a steel or aluminum frame, typically around a foam core, with colour running through the material.
Materials
PVC skin, steel frame, polyurethane core.
Durability
Fifteen to twenty-five years; the frame usually decides the end of life, not the skin.
Maintenance
Hose it down. That is genuinely most of it, plus normal hardware lubrication.
Insulation
R-9 to R-14 with a foamed core.
Appearance
Clean panel lines with a slight sheen; woodgrain textures exist but read as texture rather than as timber.
Best Uses
Beach houses, rentals, family homes where the door takes hits.
Windows
Standard rectangular inserts in the top section.
Finishes & Colors
Through-coloured white, almond, sandstone and a handful of darker tones.
Opener Notes
Light and easy on every drive type.
Repair
Hardware and rollers are the usual repairs; the skin itself rarely needs work.
Replacement
Replace when the internal frame has bent or when the section joints have loosened enough to rack the door.

Insulated Garage Doors

Any door with a foam core bonded between the exterior skin and an interior backer, rated by R-value.

Advantages

  • Keeps a room over the garage genuinely usable in January
  • Sandwich sections are far more rigid, so the door stays flat
  • Meaningfully quieter, both in operation and against street noise

Trade-Offs

  • Costs more up front than a single-layer door
  • Heavier, which means correct spring sizing is not optional
Construction
Polystyrene boards are cut and fitted, or polyurethane is injected and expands to bond both skins into a rigid sandwich section.
Materials
Steel or fiberglass skins, EPS or PU foam core, steel or vinyl back panel.
Durability
The insulation outlives the finish; bonded polyurethane sections resist twisting for decades.
Maintenance
Keep perimeter and bottom seals intact — a great R-value with a gapped seal still leaks heat.
Insulation
R-6 single-layer-plus, R-9 to R-13 mid-range polystyrene, R-16 to R-18+ polyurethane.
Appearance
Identical to non-insulated from the street; the difference is the finished interior face.
Best Uses
Attached garages, bedrooms above the garage, heated workshops, gyms.
Windows
Insulated glass inserts are worth specifying, otherwise the glazing undoes the panel rating.
Finishes & Colors
Same finish range as steel, plus white or grey interior backers.
Opener Notes
Weight moves up a class — 3/4 HP on a double insulated door, and heavier torsion springs.
Repair
Damaged sections are replaced individually; delaminated backers can be re-bonded in place.
Replacement
Replace when a non-insulated door is heating the street, or when the core has absorbed water after a flood.

Non-Insulated Garage Doors

Single-skin doors with no core — the cheapest way to close an opening securely.

Advantages

  • Lowest purchase and installation cost
  • Lightest option, so springs and openers work easily
  • Perfectly adequate on a detached, unheated garage

Trade-Offs

  • No thermal benefit whatsoever
  • Noticeably louder and flexes in wind
Construction
One layer of formed steel or aluminum with exposed struts and hardware on the inside face.
Materials
Steel or aluminum skin, steel struts and stiles.
Durability
Fifteen to twenty-five years, but the panel flexes more, so dents and waves show earlier.

Frames are fabricated to the opening, then clad in timber, steel, aluminum or a mixed overlay, with hardware specified to the finished weight.
Materials
Cedar and mahogany overlays, steel carriers, aluminum frames, glass, composite backers.
Durability
Determined by the cladding, not the concept; a steel-carrier custom door with cedar overlay lasts as long as its finish schedule allows.
Maintenance
Follow the schedule of whichever cladding is on the face, and keep documentation of the build for future section work.
Insulation
Anything from an uninsulated show door to an R-18 sandwich carrier behind timber overlay.
Appearance
Whatever the drawing says — this is the category for arched tops, oversized openings and unusual proportions.
Best Uses
Historic homes, architect-designed builds, oversized RV bays, converted barns.
Windows
Any glazing pattern that the structural layout of the door will carry.
Finishes & Colors
Site-finished or factory-finished in any colour or stain.
Opener Notes
Weight is calculated first, then the opener and spring package are specified to it — often a jackshaft on very heavy doors.
Repair
We measure and fabricate matching parts when originals are no longer available.
Replacement
Keep the carrier and re-clad where the structure is sound; full replacement only when the frame itself has failed.
