Steel Garage Doors

The workhorse of the New Jersey street — specified properly, a steel door outlasts the mortgage.

Gauge Is The Number Nobody Quotes You

Steel doors are sold on colour, panel pattern and R-value. The number that actually predicts how the door will look in ten years is the gauge of the skin, and it is usually buried in the spec sheet. Lower gauge means thicker steel: a 24-gauge door is meaningfully more dent-resistant than the 27-gauge sections found on builder-grade replacements.

You can feel the difference by pressing the flat of a panel between the embossed sections. On a thin door it flexes under a thumb. On a heavy-gauge insulated section it does not move at all, because the bonded core is doing structural work alongside the skin.

  • 24 gauge — heaviest common residential skin, best dent resistance
  • 25 to 26 gauge — the practical middle of the market
  • 27 gauge — builder grade, dents from a thrown ball
  • Bonded polyurethane cores add rigidity independent of gauge

Rust, Salt Air And Cut Edges

Steel doors are galvanized and factory-primed before the finish coat, so the flat faces hold up for decades. Corrosion starts at cut edges, at the bottom rail where road salt collects, and at deep scratches that go through to bare metal.

Within a few miles of the bay or the ocean this matters far more than it does inland. On shore installations we specify heavier gauge, check that the bottom fixture and rail have proper drainage, and tell homeowners plainly to rinse the door after storms. It is the cheapest corrosion protection available and almost nobody does it.

Dents: Repair, Section Swap Or Full Replacement

A shallow dent in the flat of a panel can sometimes be worked out, but steel that has creased has stretched, and stretched steel does not go back. Once there is a crease, the honest options are living with it or replacing the section.

Single-section replacement is usually straightforward on current-production doors from the major brands, and it is far cheaper than a whole door. The obstacles are discontinued panel patterns and finish batches that no longer match after years of weathering — a new white section next to fifteen-year-old white sections rarely looks identical.

Finishes, Colours And Woodgrain

Factory finishes on steel are baked polyester over primer, and they are far more durable than anything applied on site. Smooth finishes suit contemporary panel layouts; embossed woodgrain textures hide surface waves and, in the darker stain-look colours, read convincingly as timber from the street.

Dark colours have become the default request. They look excellent, they run hotter, and they show dust more readily than almond ever did. On a south-facing elevation we would rather hang a dark colour on an insulated sandwich section than on a single skin.

What A Steel Door Costs To Own

Purchase price is only part of it. The reason steel dominates residential garages here is that ownership cost is close to zero: no refinishing schedule, no seasonal movement, no specialist parts. Wash it, lubricate the hardware, replace the springs when they reach their cycle life, and the door itself is a twenty-five year item.

We install steel doors from every major manufacturer and we are not tied to one line. Call (888) 706-5757 and we will quote two or three genuinely comparable options rather than one.

FAQ

Steel Garage Doors FAQ

  • 24 to 26 gauge for a door you want to stop worrying about. 27 gauge is common on builder-grade installations and dents easily. On an insulated sandwich section, a bonded polyurethane core adds rigidity that partly compensates for a lighter skin.
