Why People Still Choose Timber
Embossed steel woodgrain has become genuinely convincing, and from thirty feet it fools most people. Up close it does not, because printed grain repeats and real grain does not. On a house where the garage door sits beside the front door, or under a portico where visitors stand next to it, that difference is the whole argument.
Timber also takes millwork. A cedar door can be cut to the same panel proportions as the entry door, given the same bead detail and finished in the same stain. No catalogue door can do that.
Species, Joinery And Movement
Western red cedar is the default because it is stable, light for its size and takes stain beautifully. Mahogany is heavier and denser with a tighter grain, better suited to formal facades and dark finishes. Hemlock is a budget option that needs a disciplined finish schedule, and accoya, though expensive, is exceptionally dimensionally stable.
Whatever the species, the joinery has to allow movement. Stile-and-rail construction with floating panels lets timber expand across the grain through a humid New Jersey August and shrink back in January. Glued-up panels that cannot move will split, and no finish will stop that.

Weight, Springs And Hardware
A solid timber double door can weigh two or three times what a steel equivalent weighs. That figure drives everything else: torsion spring wire size and length, drum selection, track gauge, hinge specification and opener choice. We weigh the door rather than estimating it, because a spring package calculated on a guess will fail early and take the cables with it.
Hardware should be through-bolted where possible. Screws into end grain loosen, and a hinge that has worked loose on a heavy door will tear out its mounting and rack the section.

Finishing: The Part That Decides Everything
A wood garage door is a finish maintenance commitment, and the houses where these doors look terrible are always the ones where that was not explained at purchase. South and west elevations get the worst of it — UV breaks down the finish, then water gets into the surface, then the grain lifts and greys.
Penetrating oils are easy to refresh and forgiving of a missed year, but they need doing more often. Marine spar varnish looks superb and lasts longer, but when it does fail it fails by peeling, which means sanding back rather than recoating. Solid-body stains and paint last longest of all and hide the grain you paid for.
The step most installers skip is back-sealing: finishing the interior face and all four edges, especially the bottom rail end grain. Water wicking up from the floor is what actually kills wood doors in this state, not rain on the face.
Repairing Rather Than Replacing
Timber is the one material that rewards repair. Rotten sections can be cut back and scarfed in with matching stock, split panels can be re-glued and re-pinned, worn hinge locations can be plugged and re-drilled, and a badly weathered face can be sanded and refinished back to something close to new.
