What R-Value Actually Buys You
R-value on a garage door is measured through the section, not across the whole opening, so the printed number is the ceiling rather than the result. What you feel in the room above the garage depends on the core, the perimeter seals, the bottom seal and whether the glazing was specified to match the panel. An R-18 door with a worn bottom seal and single-pane windows will underperform an honest R-12 door that was installed tight.
In practice, the jump that homeowners actually notice is from no insulation to any insulation. A single-skin door in a January cold snap leaves the garage within a couple of degrees of outside. A polyurethane sandwich section holds fifteen to twenty degrees of difference with no heating at all, which is the difference between a garage you avoid and one you use.

Polystyrene Board Versus Injected Polyurethane
Polystyrene doors use pre-cut foam boards dropped into the steel skin. They are cheaper, they insulate reasonably, and the board is a passenger — it does not add structural strength because it is not bonded to both faces.
Polyurethane doors are made differently. Liquid foam is injected between the outer skin and an inner steel backer, and it expands to bond both faces into one rigid unit. That bond is why a polyurethane section resists twisting across a sixteen-foot double door, and why it stays flat after twenty winters while a board-insulated door starts to wave.
If the garage is attached, has a room above it, or gets used as a workshop or a gym, the polyurethane step is the one worth paying for. On a detached storage garage, board insulation is an entirely defensible choice.
Weight, Springs And Opener Sizing
Insulation adds mass, and mass is what springs are sized against. A great many of the balance problems we are called out to in New Jersey trace back to an insulated door hung on the spring package that came off the old single-skin door. The symptoms are consistent: the door drifts down when stopped halfway, the opener strains at the top of travel, and the springs fail years early because they are cycling past their rated load.
We weigh the door and calculate the torsion package against it. On a double insulated door that usually means a 3/4 HP opener and high-cycle springs rather than the stock 10,000-cycle set.

Noise, Comfort And The Room Above
Insulated sections are noticeably quieter for two separate reasons. The foam damps the drum-like resonance of a bare steel panel, and the extra rigidity stops the section flexing against the rollers on every start and stop. Pair a sandwich door with a belt drive and nylon rollers and the loudest thing left in the cycle is the door meeting the floor.
For bedrooms over the garage, that acoustic gain is often valued more than the heating saving. It is the reason we recommend the upgrade on almost every attached garage under a finished room.
Retrofit Kits And When They Make Sense
Foam board retrofit kits are sold for existing single-layer doors. They add some thermal value, but they also add weight to a door whose springs were never sized for it, and the panels are held on with clips that rattle loose. We will fit them where budget rules the decision, but we will also tell you plainly that the door balance has to be re-checked afterwards.
