Read The Blink Before You Touch Anything
Almost every opener built since 1993 carries a pair of photo-eye sensors near the floor, and almost every opener tells you when they disagree. Press the wall button and watch: if the opener light flashes ten times, or the motor clicks and the door rolls straight back up, the safety circuit is the reason it will not close.
Now look at the sensors themselves. One eye is the sender, usually a steady amber or yellow LED. The other is the receiver, usually green. A steady green means alignment is good. A flickering, dim or dark green means the pair is not seeing each other, and the opener will refuse to close the door — which is exactly what that circuit was designed for.

The Five-Minute Homeowner Checklist
Start with the stupid stuff, because it is right most of the time. A recycling bin, a bicycle wheel, a coiled hose or a snow shovel leaned in the corner will break the beam. So will a cobweb across the lens or the road film that builds up on every North Jersey garage floor between November and March. A dry microfiber cloth on both lenses fixes more doors than any part we sell.
Next, check the brackets. Sensors sit about six inches off the slab, and it takes almost nothing to knock one out of aim — a car door, a leaf blower, a kid's scooter. Loosen the wing nut, sight the sender directly at the receiver, and watch the receiver LED go from flicker to steady before you tighten it back down.
Then check the sun. Low winter light coming through an open door in the late afternoon can blind a receiver on a south-facing garage. If your door only misbehaves at one time of day, that is your answer, and a simple sun shield or swapping the sender and receiver sides solves it permanently.
- Clear anything within the beam path across the opening
- Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth, not a wet one
- Re-aim brackets until the receiver LED is steady
- Check for staples or pinched wire along the wall run
- Watch for direct low sun washing out the receiver

When It Is Not The Sensors At All
If the sensors read steady green and the door still stops short, the close limit is the next suspect. Openers learn a stopping point, and a limit set too low makes the unit believe the door has hit an obstruction when it is still two inches from the floor. The motor reverses because that is the safe assumption.
A door that closes most of the way then bounces back is often mechanical instead: a flattened roller, a bent bottom section of track, or debris in the track that the door hits at the same spot every time. Watch where the reversal happens. A reversal at a repeatable height is a mechanical or track story, while a reversal that happens anywhere is electrical.
Then there is the frayed or slack cable. When a lift cable jumps its drum on one side, the door drops unevenly, binds against the jamb and reverses. That one is not a DIY repair — a slack cable usually means the spring or drum needs attention too, and forcing the door in that state is how sections get bent.

What Never To Do
Do not bypass the photo eyes by twisting the wires together, and do not tape the sensors facing each other on a shelf. Both tricks are common enough that we see them monthly, and both remove the only thing standing between a descending door and a child or pet under it. Federal safety rules have required that circuit since 1993 for exactly this reason.
Also avoid cranking the close force up to muscle a door past a problem. Force settings exist to compensate for normal seasonal variation, not to override a genuine obstruction. Turning them up hides the fault, wears the opener and makes the eventual failure more expensive.
